She has the drive, the resources, and the talent to capture the gold. No one could guess that Roan’s home life is less like a dream and more like a never-ending nightmare. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amy Short -- Wow! : Trigger warning: Explicit sexual assault, incest, sexual abuse, rape, child abuse and an animal dies. When the animal dies, it won't be awful, gross or explicit. It's just really sad. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from JDA007 -- Four stars for pacing : This novel was definitely engaging, which is one of the things I liked about it. It's a quick read and most of the characters - particularly the young lady, Roan - are engaging. That said, I think many of the problems she faces are described graphically but resolved simplistically. I suppose heroines have to be strong, but this one is a lot more tough-minded than I imagine a child could be. I also felt the relationships she has with people outside of her father were ultimately wasted, except for the one with her eventual boyfriend. Their relationship struck me as too good to be true - the knight in shining armor who rarely exists in real life. Characters like Gertrude, the housekeeper, had a lot of potential but were ultimately abandoned in favor of this teenager solving her problems on her own. The writing is trite and simple and the subject matter is abhorrent. This is not a story of a strong young woman, instead it is a poorly constructed story of a wealthy privileged girl who is abused by her father. I am not racing through it, I have to put it away because it's kind of disturbing but that's the point, so I guess it's doing a good job. I feel like at times it is too wordy. To do what she has trained her whole life to do, she has had to surrender completely to the will of her father, an exacting coach and inappropriately possessive parent. She has also had to accept her mother’s antipathy and indifference. Roan’s passion for horses may be the only honest thing in a world where love is trampled by anger, abandonment, and abuse—until she meets Will and discovers the capacity to chart her own destiny. DARK HORSES does not shy away from difficult truths or hard choices. The road to redemption is littered with loss. The characters are imperfect, even Roan, but their imperfections lend them depth and believability. As hard as the subject material can be, the book is impossible to put down. It's the fact that Roan's story has not a hint of cliché that gives it its brilliance. Mihalic gives a complex subject its due, with realistic sensitivity and unvarnished truth. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elaine -- Intense Subject matter : Engrossing from page One. I had to look and see if this was truly a work of fiction. The story centers around family sexual abuse. I felt like I was reading a memoir due to the detailed descriptions and the feelings of the persons involved. I heard that children who are abused still love the parent that abuses them. Hard to believe but true in many cases.The mind is a many faceted part of us and we learn to compartmentalize some things we live through. In addition this book taught me a lot about the horse competition world. It is immensely finite in its detail. One can see where control and narcissism is a natural pathway. The writing is fabulous and I hope that means this Author will follow up with more books. I will certainly keep her name on my follow list. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021 )
